tf2 fan art

So, I've been a fan of the art style of Team Fortress 2 since the game's debut. I recently created a little fan art of a new character class; The Aviator. This was a really fun project, and I learned a lot about creating full characters for real-time (I still have a lot more to learn though). The music, background and font are all lifted from the game, so they are property of Valve.

Here are some concept sketches I did prior to modeling:

And here are some screen shots of the model I ended up with:

And here is a progression reel for the modeling and texturing process:

Thanks a lot for the kind words everyone. Darrin, I used Maya and Zbrush for the modeling. I started with cylinders and the create poly tool mostly (Maya) and then added the detail/Normal map in Zbrush.

Very nice. I think i would have gone more with a rocketeer look though.

Sweet! I'm also a huge fan of everything Valve puts out.

Great seeing you last night at the Maya Users Group. Mudbox rocks!

Quick question.

Would you ever consider releasing it as a replacement model for tf2? I know it would be a lot of work (animations, rigging, ...ect).

Thank you.

OMG! You tease us, sir! Such a wonderful character, and it fits so nicely with the TF2 theme.

Here’s my ideas for what this guy does;

PERSONALITY: Snooty French guy.
HEALTH: 125 (buffs to 185)
SPEED: 93% (same as demo)
PRIMARY WPN: Missile Launcher. 6 clips of 4 missiles. Shoots small missiles which follow a spiraling trajectory, which becomes more pronounced as they travel further. This makes them rather inaccurate at range. The explosion is not too big without too much knockback, so not too much risk of killing yourself at close range.
SECONDARY WPN: Magnum. 9 clips of 5 bullets. In between the Pistol and Revolver in terms of accuracy, firing speed and noise.
MELEE WPN: Rapier. It’s a standard melee weapon.
FLIGHT: The Aviator has a flight gauge consisting of 15 units, which refills at 1 unit every 3 seconds when not in use, and can be added to with ammo packs, resupplies and dispensers (these are the same numbers as the Spy’s cloak). Whenever this guy jumps, he starts hovering downwards and forwards, at about 60 degrees to the vertical. This uses the gauge at 1 unit per second. Holding the jump button will make him ascend at 30 degrees to the vertical, using 3 units per second. Dumping a full flight gauge can get him about as high as a well-timed single rocket jump.
